Haiti means “mountainous country” in Taino, the island’s first aboriginal people. With about two fifths of the territory more than 490 meters above sea level, you can guess why! If you are an adventurer, in love with mountains and green open spaces, this trip is made for you! 

Through this journey, PAP’PADAP! Travels invites you to discover Haiti through its famous mountains full of history that characterize so well the Pearl of the Caribbeans. You begin your ascent in the mountains of the west of the country, in Thomassin where you will be immersed to soak up the Caribbean atmosphere.

PAP’PADAP! Travels take you on a timeless journey where you will discover the Coffee Route which will lead you to the city of Jacmel in the South East. In your journey, you will meet our local partner who will explain his actions to preserve the country’s biodiversity.

Your itinerary

Day 1: Arrival at Port-au-Prince airport + Thomassin welcome cocktail

Welcome to Port-au-Prince! 

Your driver will pick you up at the airport to go to Thomassin, a town on the road to Kenscoff, in the heights of Port-au-Prince. 

You’ll go from the hustle and bustle of the capital to a calmer mountain climate. Welcome to Thomassin where the locals swear by the farming of fruit and vegetables

Upon arriving at the guesthouse, PAP’PADAP! Travels offers you a welcome cocktail! 

This will be an opportunity to brief you about our stay and get to know each other better!

Travel time: about 1h30 by car – 30 km

Day 2: Thomassin Tour + Fort Jacques & Fort Alexandre Tour

Your day will start with a good local breakfast to start your culinary journey.

To put you in the ambiance, PAP’PADAP! Travels takes you for a visit to Fort Jacques which was built under the direction of Alexandre Pétion under the order of Dessalines, in order to prevent the return of the French after the independence of the island.

Through the stories told by our guide, you can (re) discover the history of Haiti, the first independent black country, and end your visit enjoying the incredible view of the bay of Port-au-Prince! A picnic area has been set up in the forest to take advantage of the climate on the heights of the island.

You will then descend to Thomassin to stroll through the streets and hills of this village perched on the mountains. Our guide will show you how life is in Thomassin: how people live, where they go shopping, where they eat, drink or even dance!

Day 3: Wynne Farm Ecological Reserve + Furcy Village Tour

PAP’PADAP! Travels take you to the discovery of the ecological reserve Wynne Farm, located at Kenscoff, in the mountains.

The farm guide will explain the challenges of deforestation, land erosion in Haiti, and their activities to raise awareness of respect for the environment to preserve our planet.

Why not take a horse to visit it all? And finish this visit with a workshop making brick from used paper?

Then, you will take the road in the mountains to arrive at Furcy where you will settle for days in an ecolodge that offers a breathtaking view of the mountain range of Haiti.

You will spend your afternoon walking around and discovering the richness of agriculture in the region.

Your guide will show you one of the best spots to watch the sunset. #Sunsetlovers alert!

Day 4: Hike Bassin Bleu Furcy

After a nice typical breakfast, you will start your day with a hike through the hills surrounding Furcy.

If the weather is nice, you can walk to the Bassin Bleu waterfall to refresh and relax to the sound of water gushing from the waterfall. The path to get there is really nice! The bravest can swim in the waterfall but the water is very cold!

Our guide will take the opportunity to explain to you the way of life of Furcy communities, what they cultivate, how they sell it, cook it etc.

We will take the road back to the ecolodge where you will have your lunch. The rest of the afternoon will allow you to enjoy your last moments in this green paradise.

Days 5 & 6: Hiking La Visite National Park

Let’s go for 2 days of hiking in the heart of La Visite National Park.

During this excursion, you will discover several endemic shrub and herbaceous species that are only found on this part of the island. The park is interspersed with ravines and waterfalls that will rythm your route.

Once we reach the Shelter, where we will spend the night to meet and share with our local partner who will explain his actions to preserve the Park.

The next day, PAP’PADAP! Travels invites you to continue La Visite National Park discovery by walking through the small villages perched high in the mountains. You will see the different fruit and vegetable plantations of the farmers. Do not hesitate to ask them questions, they will be happy to answer you!

This is the moment when the word “authentic” takes on its full meaning. The inhabitants here live mainly from their crops and access to electricity is still limited.

This is an opportunity to learn about mountain culture in Haiti, and why not test Creole? The locals will greatly appreciate your effort. With a “Bonjou! sa kap fèt ”(Hello! What’s up?), you will see them smile by answering the typical answer “Everything good thanks to God” and easily start a conversation you will remember!

Day 7: Coffee Route + Marigot Beach

You start your day with the Coffe Route Tour, located in the town of Marigot.

Our local partner will take the opportunity to explain the whole process from picking to roasting coffee. Through a lush small forest, this guided tour allows you to discover the biodiversity of the region.

Formerly known as a serious competitor to Colombian coffee, you will discover what is hidden behind Haitian coffee. Our local partner will invite you to the end the visit with a tasting of this famous coffee and why not buy some to bring it home and make it discover yourself!

You will have the choice for the rest of the day between going to relax at the beach or discovering the artistic city of Jacmel and its famous papier mache statues.

Day 8: Jacmel + Raymond les Bains Beach

After a nice breakfast, it’s time to say goodbye to the hills of La Visite National Park.

Enjoy your last moments in the mountains before you are taken to find the warmth of Southeast coasts.

You will take the road towards the coast to the provinces of Jacmel. You will go from one mountainous decor at the sea lined with palm trees in just a few hours!

PAP’PADAP! Travels brings you to a guesthouse where you will stay during your stopover to Jacmel. From here you can relax to the sounds of the waves and why not sip a cocktail!

You will have the choice between going for a swim in the nearby beaches or going to Jacmel to discover the excitement of Lakou New York to enjoy the end of the afternoon.

Day 9: Departure for Pétionville + Boutillier Observatory + Departure evening

It’s time to leave Jacmel’s coast and head west.

After a nice meal with a view of the Caribbean Sea, you will hit the road for Pétionville, a must-see city in the suburbs of Port-au-Prince.

Perched in the mountains, Pétionville becomes over the years the economic pole of the country. Restaurants, hotels and shops make the entertainment of the city.

It will be an opportunity to stroll through the streets to pick up a few paintings or some souvenirs.

To end your stay in style, PAP’PADAP! Travels takes you to spend the evening at the Boutillier Observatory (or similar establishment subject to availability) which offers a unique view of the whole of Port-au-Prince.

Day 10: Departure Port-au-Prince Airport

It’s time to say goodbye to dear Haiti! Depart for Port-au-Prince Airport.

Airport transfers, those to your accommodation and during the activities will be carried out either by 4×4 vehicles, Pap padap mini buses, or traditional tap taps depending on the size of the group, the type of road in the areas visited and the availability of vehicles from our local partners.

This ecological farm in Kenscoff has been dedicated to protect the environment through education for over 50 years! Thanks to agroforestry, the underground water naturally stored underground feeds the village’s water sources. This model makes it possible to supply water to the whole community! Through a guided tour, PAP’PADAP! Travels will make you discover the different activities of the Wynn Farm Ecological Reserve.

Ricardo Etienne – Ozone Village

This atypical constructions enthusiast established these Ecolodge in the area of ​​Furcy in order to attract visitors and show them how anyone can build treehouses just with salvaged materials. Its cozy little nests offer breathtaking views of the mountain range of Haiti.

A meeting with Ricardo is the best way to understand the importance of entrepreneurship in Haiti and how an ecological commitment can develop wealth at the local level.

Rudolf Derose – The Coffee Route: Jean-Noël Fund Coffee Planters Association

This group of promoters led by Rudolf Dérose is part of the dynamics of community rural tourism as an instrument for sustainable development. Their objectives: to draw the attention of the communities where coffee is produced to the positive effects of its culture, and to promote the land by attracting investors to redo the coffee plantations, most of which are in the process of disappearing.

A meeting with Rudolf is the best way to understand how investing in coffee can generate wealth by promoting history, culture, gastronomy, crafts, communities and their talents.
